The tunnel was opened on March 29, 1909. On the same day, a cable car (about 2 km long) was also inaugurated, located opposite the excavation on the other side of the river, on the left orographic side, which allowed the connection with the Valpelline foundries.
It winds for 2.5 km and is connected to the mining tunnels of the Saint-Jean section in Ollomont at the level called Santa Barbara. It serves as a discharge point for the material: from here, a cable car transports the extracted mineral to Valpelline, to the foundries built downstream of the town on the left orographic side, for initial processing. The material is then transported to Quart for further processing and distribution.
Outside, near the tunnel, there are also some buildings that house a warehouse, a workshop, a powder magazine, accommodation for the workers and a room for pumping water.
